Trailers are the most ignored piece of boating equipment. Before traveling on the road, you want to assure nothing happens that would leave you stranded leaving your investment unprotected while you seek help. It is vital to make sure your boat trailer is not the problem.
Maintainence is the key.
Wash your trailer after each use, especially if it was in saltwater. Saltwater is very corrosive!
Check tire pressure and tire thread prior to traveling. These tires are designed to hold higher air pressure than tires on your car. Properly inflated tires will provide smooth riding and reduce severe tire wear.
Periodically, remove your trailer tires, and inspect your bearings and hubs for damage. Replace if necessary. Bearings bear and disperse friction of revolving wheels. They are,the hardest working part of a boat trailer. Keep bearings always lubricated to avoid rust and deterioration.
To prevent rust, continue to protect your trailer hardware with Corrosion X. Spray the nuts, bolts, and all other hardware items.
Do not put too much weight on the trailer. Look at the weight rating on your trailer and do not exceed the maximum weight.
As you do with your car, carry emergency equipment for your trailer. An emergency kit may consist of a spare tire and wheel, wheel bearings, lights, tie down straps and tools. Last thing you want to do in an emergency is be unprepared.
